(Worship of the Boats)BOITA BANDANA UTSAB, is one of the most important socio-religious festivals in coastal Odisha, which provides vital information about Kalinga’s glorious maritime heritage. The Festival of Boita bandana celebrated on Kartika Purnima, the full-moon day of Kartika (October-November). The festival is celebrated to commemorate the glorious past of commercial sea journeys that were organized to the islands of Bali, Sumatra and Java. Glorious maritime past is remembered and celebrated symbolically.
History books say the Sadhabas (traders) from Kalinga, erstwhile Odisha, used to begin their business journeys to different countries through sea on the auspicious day of Kartik Purnima every year.
Their family members used to gather on the sea shore to give them a grand farewell, wishing them good luck during their journey. The state celebrates the event even today. The Baluchari and Swanrachari sarees are originated 500 Years ago in West Bengal. The name came into existence because the weaving of these sarees started in a small village called Baluchar in the Murshidabad district of West Bengal. The sarees are known for their intricate patterns and handwork on them. It can easily be identified from the construction of long pallu/anchal and placement of its design motifs in perfect rectangular closed corners that maintain continuity of the designs without break. The basic fabric is heavier and more compact than Banarasi Saree.

Kotpad handloom fabric is the first item from Odisha that received the Geographical Indication tag, in 2005. The Mirgan community of Kotpad is famous for their exquisite organic dyed textile. They usually weave this textile for “Bhotada”, “Dharua” and other motifs of their neighbouring tribal communities. Ashavali saree is Named after the city of Ahmedabad, once known as Ashaval, which has been a brocade and silk weaving centre since at least the fifteenth century, the Ashavali is therefore also known as the Amdavadi or Amdavadi zari saree. The weavers of this textile were patronised by the Mughals, local royalty, and rich mercantile class in Gujarat, which according to some theories is where brocade weaving originated in India. It is believed that Benaras emerged as the new brocade weaving centre after a great fire in 1300 CE caused many Ashavali Saree weavers to migrate there.

8 km from the city of Bhuj in Gujarat is a textile hub called Bhujodi, whose artisans weave a 500-year-old story into every product that comes off their looms. Each handspun saree woven here is a beauty crafted by the Vankars of Bhujodi. The signature element of these Vankars (weavers) is how simple, usually geometric motifs are arranged aesthetically and then woven into the fabric using a special technique. The yarn, whether cotton, desi tussar or woollen, is dyed in rich shades of natural colours, providing an earthy look and feel.
